A bold, yet elegant statement of coastal luxury

Project Overview

A collaboration between Casey Brown Architecture and Lime Building Group, the design of South Coast Beach House is a sophisticated, modern response to the harsh yet beautiful coastal environment.

The architecture emphasizes robust materiality (exposed white brick, concrete, brass, copper) and seamless indoor-outdoor living, particularly on the upper level which features large, fully opening door configurations leading to protruding balconies. This open-plan philosophy, critical to the beach house experience, necessitates a highly effective and visually discreet drainage system.

The Drainage Challenge

Coastal environments present unique drainage challenges, especially for a design focused on minimal visual barriers and expansive outdoor areas:

1. Seamless Thresholds (Zero Step-Down): The architectural vision required the flow between internal living spaces and external decks to be flush, eliminating traditional hobs or steps. This is vital for universal accessibility and maximizing the feeling of an open, continuous space.
2. Weather Resistance: The location, close to a surf beach and a lagoon, exposes the structure to corrosive salt spray, high rainfall, and potential water ingress. The drainage solution had to be highly durable and prevent water pooling on outdoor surfaces.
3. Aesthetic Integration: Given the house's meticulous craftsmanship and sophisticated material palette (including stone floors and marine-grade metals), the drainage system needed to be virtually invisible or, at minimum, an elegant design feature that didn't detract from the architectural details.

Stormtech Linear Drainage Solution

Stormtech threshold drainage systems were specified to achieve a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces, aligning with the project's premium design and functionality requirements.

In addition, a custom tile insert drainage solution with curved corners provided the perfect integration with the curved concrete walls surrounding the balcony.
